José Manuel García-Margallo – Foreign Minister
José Manuel García-Margallo y Marfil is Spain’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. He has been in the post since 22nd December 2011.
Born in Madrid on 13th August 1944, García-Margallo studied Law and Economics and worked as an economist for the Spanish Treasury as well as a university lecturer prior to his political career.
Politically active from an early age, García-Margallo was elected to the Congress of Deputies several times in the 1980s and early 1990s, representing the city of Valencia, initially for the Coalición Popular and subsequently for the Partido Popular.
In 1994 he was chosen as a candidate for the PP in the European Parliament elections, and was duly elected. He served as a well-known and influential MEP in Brussels until his appointment as Foreign Minister of Spain in December 2011.
